The Effects of Pitch Range and Duration on Tone Categorical Perception
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous research has mainly focused on the influence of language experience (cross-language or cross-dialect), and stimulus complexity (speech vs. non-speech) on the categorical perception of tones. This study further investigates whether pitch range and duration affect tone categorical perception. Four speech tone continua differing in pitch range and duration were presented to native Mandarin listeners. Both identification and discrimination experiments were conducted. The results confirm that perception of speech tone continua for native Mandarin listeners is categorical, with discrimination peaks being well aligned with the identification boundaries. Pitch range was found to significantly influence the position of categorical boundary while duration only played a limited role in modulating the boundary position.

Effects of stimulus duration and vowel quality in cross-linguistic categorical perception of pitch directions
We investigated categorical perception of rising and falling pitch contours by tonal and non-tonal listeners. Specifically, we determined minimum durations needed to perceive both contours and compared to those of production, how stimuli duration affects their perception, whether there is an intrinsic F0 effect, and how first language background, duration, directions of pitch and vowel quality ...
متن کاملDeficits of congenital amusia beyond pitch: Evidence from impaired categorical perception of vowels in Cantonese-speaking congenital amusics
Congenital amusia is a lifelong disorder of fine-grained pitch processing in music and speech. However, it remains unclear whether amusia is a pitch-specific deficit, or whether it affects frequency/spectral processing more broadly, such as the perception of formant frequency in vowels, apart from pitch. In this study, in order to illuminate the scope of the deficits, we compared the performanc...
متن کاملProduction and Perception of Tone 3 Focus in Mandarin Chinese
This study uses production and perception experiments to explore tone 3 focus in Mandarin Chinese. Overall, contrastive focus in Mandarin is clearly marked with increased duration, intensity, and pitch range: in the experiments, listeners identified focused syllables correctly more than 90% of the time. However, a tone 3 syllable offers a smaller capacity for pitch range expansion under focus, ...
متن کاملEffects of language experience and stimulus complexity on the categorical perception of pitch direction.
Whether or not categorical perception results from the operation of a special, language-specific, speech mode remains controversial. In this cross-language (Mandarin Chinese, English) study of the categorical nature of tone perception, we compared native Mandarin and English speakers' perception of a physical continuum of fundamental frequency contours ranging from a level to rising tone in bot...

Introduction: habitual pitch perception associated with the mean fundamental frequency of speech. In the clinical evaluation referred to this issue is dealt with in the normal range for a person whether he is a habitual pitch. A common feature in many of the abnormal pitch of voice disorders, the assessment of habitual pitch and factors affecting it, may help scientists to determine the exist...
